Library Updates

March 30, 2020 COVID-19 Update

Posted by awade on

Hello all,

Caroline County Library and all its branches will remain closed until further notice.  Although it was our original intention to reopen the libraries today, current conditions mean that to do so would risk the health and safety of library staff and patrons.  As long as it remains safe to do so, we will continue to provide curbside service at the Bowling Green, Dawn, and Ladysmith branches, making changes as needed to make the process as safe as possible.

While the buildings are closed, please be aware of the following changes:

  • Donations will not be accepted during this time. Please hold onto these items until the buildings reopen.  Donations are never accepted in the book drop.
  • Due to warehouse closures, we will not be able to get any new releases of physical books or movies. Please check out Overdrive collection if you want to check any of these out.
  • Tables will be set outside for curbside pick-ups. Returns should still be placed in the book drops outside the building.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to call your local branch for more information.  We appreciate your patience during this time.

March 23, 2020 COVID-19 Update

Hello again,

I just wanted to take a few minutes to keep you guys informed of what’s going on at the library while we are closed to the public.

  • If you or someone you know doesn’t have a library card, there is a temporary card application on our website. Fill that out and in one business day, you’ll be emailed your library card number- no proof of residence required!  This card will be valid until June 1st, but you can extend it when the library reopens.
  • Curbside service is still open! Request a book or DVD online or over the phone, then we’ll contact you when your items are ready to schedule a pickup time.
  • If you can’t make it to a branch, don’t forget our wide selection of e-resources on our website! Overdrive has a great selection of e-books and downloadable audiobooks available 24/7.  Need help with kids at home- check out our e-learning resources like World Book Early World of Learning.
  • FORGET FINES! With library branches closed, we will not be charging overdue fines or fees to any of our patrons.  You can still return your items to our outside book drops, but if you can’t get out don’t worry about it.

I hope you all are healthy and happy wherever you are.  We hope to see you soon!

March 16, 2020 COVID-19

In order to stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), the Caroline County Library is closing to the public starting Monday, March 16th. The library buildings will remain closed until Monday, March 30th pending further guidance from county leaders. I know that I speak for all library staff when I say that we will miss you, but we are hoping to protect the health of our patrons and staff by taking this step.

Please note the following:

AARP tax volunteers have let us know that they are suspending all appointments until further notice. We do not know at this point when or if they will be back, but each branch has a client notification list that patrons can add their name to in case appointments resume.

The digital library will still be open! You can go to http://www.carolinelibrary.org/e-resources-2/ to explore all our digital materials, including e-books, downloadable audiobooks, digital magazines, and more 24/7! As long as you have a library card, you can access these materials for free.

Library staff will be available for telephone assistance and curbside pickup 10:00am to 5:00pm during the week. Call your local branch to request books, schedule pickups, and get help with any other library-related issues. Branches will be available on the following schedule:

Bowling Green: Monday and Thursday
Ladysmith: Tuesday and Friday
Dawn: Wednesday and Friday
At this time the Port Royal branch will be closed for the full two weeks.

Outside book drops are available for returns.

Thank you all for your patience during this time. We hope to see you back at the library soon!

Good Morning,

We hope everyone remembered to turn their clocks ahead one hour this weekend. It definitely makes Monday morning a little harder to get going. But with the sunshine and warmer weather we sincerely hope you have a great day!

Do you use OverDrive? OverDrive now has a hold redelivery feature that will allow you to better control your eBooks from OverDrive.

How does hold redelivery work?

  • When a hold becomes available, a user will receive a notification and have 3 days to pick up the hold.
  • The user can then borrow the hold, have it delivered later, or cancel it.
  • When a user chooses to have a hold delivered later, they pick the earliest possible date to receive the title, keep their place in line, and pass the copy to the next person in line.
  • After the “deliver later” date, the user will receive the next available copy.
  • If a user takes no action during the hold pickup window, the “deliver after seven days” option will be automatically applied as a one-time courtesy.
  • If the user takes no action a second time, their hold will be canceled.

What are some benefits of hold redelivery?

  • Users can borrow and read titles when it’s convenient for them.
  • Wait lists will move more efficiently as users pass books to the next person in line.
  • The next user in line will be delighted when the user ahead says, “not now.”
